The Sohar Fertiliser Project promoted by Sheikh Suhail Salim Bahwan, employs state-of-the-art technologies to produce about 1.3 million MTPA of Granular Urea and is world-class in terms of technology, scale of production, quality, environmental protection, occupational health & safety practices and energy consumption.
The Project is not only one of the largest industrial investments by any individual within the GCC but is also one of the largest green field private sector fertilizer projects in the world. This is the first time JBIC (which is one of the leading financial institutions of its kind in the world) has given a loan on Project Finance basis for a Fertiliser Project.
The Project constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan, commenced production in May 2009 and within a short time SIUCI has established an excellent reputation globally as a producer of high quality Granular Urea. The main markets for SIUCI Urea are USA, India, Australia, Thailand, Latin America, South Africa and Pakistan.
The product of SIUCI is “Granular Urea”. Urea is the most widely used nitrogenous fertiliser as it contains 46% Nitrogen by weight, which is the highest proportion among solid nitrogenous fertilisers. Urea is the main fertiliser input for growing various crops such as rice, wheat, corn, pulses and vegetables. Urea is also used in the manufacturing of chemicals such as melamine, urea formaldehyde chemical, adhesives and resins.
The Sohar Fertiliser Project is comprised of
- A 2000 MTPD Ammonia Plant;
- 3500 (2x1750) MTPD Urea Plant; and
- Related Utilities & Offsite Facilities
Ammonia is produced from the Natural Gas supplied by Oman Gas Company to the complex. The Ammonia thus produced is reacted with Carbon-dioxide in the Urea plant to produce high quality Granular Urea.
Urea is exported globally from the dedicated berth allocated to SIUCI at the Sohar Industrial Port. To preserve its high quality, Urea is transported to the berth through enclosed conveyors and loaded into the ship by a remote-controlled mechanized ship loader. During material handling and shipping operations, utmost care and hygiene practices are adopted to ensure the quality of urea loaded into the ship.
At SIUCI Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) are accorded highest priority. SIUCI have cultivated excellent QHSE culture within the organization. An Integrated QHSE Management System (IMS) has been implemented and SIUCI is an ISO-9001, ISO-14001 and OHSAS-18001 Certified Company.

A number of important socio-economic benefits are the outcome of SIUCI’s Sohar Fertiliser Project, the foremost being SIUCI’s contribution to the strategic national objective of industrial diversification by reducing the Nation’s dependence on oil revenues.
Employment generation for Nationals is another significant outcome of the Project. Right from the beginning, SIUCI has been committed towards the development of technical skills of young Omanis. Young technically qualified Nationals were inducted as technical trainees and after extensive class room, workshop and on-the-job training, they now are working in various departments such as the Operation & Maintenance of the Plant as well as in the Laboratory, Technical Services and Materials Management. In addition Nationals have been recruited in various non-technical functions.
SIUCI has made adequate arrangements for further growth by acquiring additional land, reserving seawater capacity, providing cushions in capacity of critical equipments etc. Given an opportunity, SIUCI is committed to repeat its performance, which will further enhance Oman’s position as the leading supplier of high quality Urea to the world.
